History and Background

We the Children is dedicated to saving vulnerable children in Venezuela, the United States, and around the world by combating childhood hunger, illness, and poverty. We the Children was founded in 2017 by Maytte Geiger and her husband William in honor of her grandmother, Eloisa Blanco. Maytte Geiger lived and worked in Venezuela until the age of 45 when she moved to the United States and became a U.S. citizen. She is a passionate believer in the welfare of underprivileged children.

“I lived with my grandmother Eloisa from the time that I was 4 years old until she passed. She was the most loving and caring person that I have ever known. There were 13 children under my grandmother’s care – my brothers, sisters, and cousins. She taught us how to be respectful, loving, and compassionate with others. She taught us hope. We struggled because we did not have enough food. We sometimes had to go to school with nothing to eat. Every day, my grandmother did magic with the little food that she could find for us. If I close my eyes, I can see her cooking and serving a plate for each child with love. Sometimes she helped others in our community, the hopeless and the ones that no one cared about. I saw her make these people feel special. One day when I came home from school, she was cooking, and I saw at our table the man who was collecting our rent, another that was collecting money for our electrical bill, and the poorest man from our community. I asked her, ‘What are these people doing here, Grandmother?’ She answered, ‘They were hungry!’ That day, I saw unending full bowls of soup coming from the pot to the table as if the hand of God was multiplying her food. I founded We the Children in her honor because of her heart, her love, and her compassion.” ~ Maytte Geiger

We the Children is an all-volunteer organization that works to help families meet the basic needs of food and health so that each child can grow up healthy and happy. We assist families in desperate need of food, medicine, vitamins, supplies, and hope. We the Children partners with several not-for-profit agencies located in Venezuela, the United States, and around the world that serve children in poverty.

Through our partnerships and direct service activities, We the Children assists over 2,900 children in need.

The Need and Our Response

Around the world, economic difficulties and poverty are affecting the most vulnerable – children and youth. For example, Venezuela, once the wealthiest country in the region, is experiencing the worst economic crisis in its history. Venezuela’s economic crisis has resulted in hyperinflation, frequent power outages and water shortages, chronic and severe food and medicine shortages, and massive emigration from the country. Hunger is widespread, and an estimated 30% of school-aged Venezuelan children are malnourished.

We the Children is responding to dire situations in Venezuela, the United States, and around the world by supporting families in extreme poverty by providing food, milk, supplements, medicine, and medical assistance to help children overcome the crisis and poverty and grow up healthy. We the Children sends children meals with the nutrients and calories necessary for their development and growth, provides clothing and supplies to children in need, and helps children access medical care.
